Obituary

Latriece Harper, 88, passed into our Lord’s undiluted presence December 16, 2009. Born the eldest of nine children, November 6th 1921, in Benjamin, Texas, to Eber and Thelma Rutledge, she married CB Harper in Knox City, Texas, December 9th, 1936. Preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 51 years, she is survived by her loving children, Anita Sue Harper Furr and her husband Ray; Virginia Lee Harper Gazlay and her husband Stephen; and Charles Bruce (Chip) Harper and his wife, Christie. She had seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

A businesswoman and involved mother, Latriece was known for her work ethic and energy at business, at home or in her Faith—more than once being compared to the “Proverbs 31 woman.” Retiring from business life in 1975, she became very active in Women’s Aglow Fellowship–a Christian women’s ministry–where she served in leadership capacities at the city, area, and state levels. She was a much-sought speaker and women’s spiritual counselor, bringing a deep personal Faith and a commanding knowledge of the Holy Scriptures, along with a rock-solid West Texas common sense to nearly any situation.

LatrieceIn her latter years, she became a familiar fixture among the parish community at All Saints, where they affectionately called her “Bubbe,” a nickname her family called her—the Yiddish term for “grandmother.” A loving mother and giving, Godly woman, “Bubbe” touched thousands of lives for the Lord and will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew her.

Remember thy servant Latriece, O Lord, according to the favor which thou bearest unto thy people, and grant that, increasing in knowledge and love of thee, she may go from strength to strength, in the life of perfect service, in thy heavenly kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost ever, one God, world without end. Amen.

Book Review: Re-Deal

December 15, 2009

Re-Deal: A Time-Travel Thriller Re-Deal: A Time-Travel Thriller by Richard Turner

Available from the All Saints Bookstore

Book Review by Lillie Ammann

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
A very different book, Re-Deal is a Christian time-travel featuring a blind card mechanic, a karate-kicking evangelist, and an angel who doesn’t always get it right. It will especially appeal to young men.

Liturgy Lesson for the Third Sunday in Advent: Redemption

December 12, 2009

Because Advent is a time of longing for redemption, we should use the season to help us find places in our lives that need to be redeemed—identifying whatever seems to be holding us in its power: In our devotions, invite the Holy Ghost to come, then, make a list entitled, “Powers that hold me in their grip.” Then, jot down everything from which you’d like to be set free: bad habits, ungodly relationships, a repressive job environment, anger, jealousy, envy, or dishonesty—any blockage to living in the Fruits of the Spirit. Commit whatever is on the list to prayer, asking our Lord—who sets prisoners free—to come into your life to take this problem up into Himself. Purpose this earnestly in your heart—and pray it in the power of the Holy Ghost, then watch how God changes your life in this season!

This is the story of one woman’s faith journey and a life led by the Holy Spirit. It can help other believers deepen their own faith and relationship with the Spirit.

Liturgy Lesson for the Second Sunday in Advent: Personal Encounter with Christ

December 5, 2009

Over the centuries, the liturgy of the Church has developed spirituality particularly for Christians during Advent. Both the Sunday liturgies and the daily Scripture readings direct our journey into the Advent experience of the mystery of Christ. Our parents in the faith have chosen Scriptures to accent three Advents: the Advent of Christ coming into our lives, the Advent of Christ’s physical birth, and the Advent of his second coming at the history’s end. In all these Advent devotions, we’re called to a vital, personal encounter with Christ through the Holy Ghost—not just “filling our squares” for God. To achieve this, we should, then, call on the Holy Ghost to empower our growth in the same manner…moving past just the bare essentials of simply accepting Christ as Savior, to being actually reborn in victorious lives, as the new creatures He was born to make us, and finally, growing in the Spirit and making His Kingdom purpose first in our lives, so, at the Day of His Second Coming, we may be found to be faithful servants about our Master’s business. That is real Adventus—the coming of our new lives, past the first works of repentance, to lives changed by, then dedicated to His Kingdom. If we really seek lives changed and lived this way, we need not fear what our Lord will tell us on the Great Day of Judgment—He will say, “Well done, good and faithful servant!”
