YAWN – SNIFFLE – HO-HUM by Father Ed Morgan
June 28, 2011
First question: WHAT GIVES YOU THE GREATEST JOY IN LIFE?
I mean it! What gives you the greatest joy in life? Do you even
know what joy looks like? Can you identify joy when it comes into your life? No parents, you may not cop out by saying, “Watching my children discover life on their journey through life,” or the same of your grandchildren. Boy! Is this some kind of trick question? No, this is not a trick question. This is a question that is foundational! If you do not know what gives you great joy, what DO you know?
What is joy? I think about the hymns Blessed Assurance and Amazing Grace, and I weep for the joy they bring to me. In their words I find God reaching through all the garbage of the day, extending to me, a sinner, grace and mercy. I am brought to my knees by the realization that I have value and worth and am loved, regardless of what society, peer groups, or any other gatherings would say about me. God says I am valuable and of great worth. In fact, my worth is so great that God sent His Son to buy my sins and restore me to holiness, to be set aside as someone special and loved. My joy comes at the expense of death, but death overcome through the risen Christ. So, what gives me the greatest joy in life? My joy comes from the knowledge that God loves me and promises life everlasting with Him in His Kingdom.
Well, what kind of answer did you expect from a priest? Sounds like evasion of the question, doesn’t it? It is not an evasion, but an affirmation of the truth. You see, I have been on a journey that has rocks, hills, valleys, mountains, and floods all my life, searching for that something that always seemed to elude me, that mythical success that is always just out of reach. Until I quit striving to accomplish everything on my own efforts, I could never expect to find and celebrate joy. Until I gave everything to God, and meant it, God could not bless me and I could not find the joy, the peace, that passes all understanding. God’s ways are always confounding to the world, but to the faithful they are blessings.
Second question: WHAT IF EVERYBODY IN THE CHURCH (the Body of Christ) HAD YOUR COMMITMENT?
To be continued with God….
Liturgy Lesson for the First Sunday after Trinity: Calling Him Back
June 26, 2011
The Lords’ Supper, also called Eucharist (Great Thanksgiving), Holy Communion, or Mass (meaning a sending out) is the central worship act and one of two sacraments(including penance) repeated in the Church. Ordained by our Lord in St. Matt 26, St.Mark 14, St. Luke 22 and 1 Cor 11, it is central to our life in Jesus. We use the term“life” decidedly, because Jesus commanded us to observe this sacrament to have life. Additionally, He also told us to do it in remembrance of Him—a term meaning “calling Him back.” Because of this, we believe He inhabits the wine and bread spiritually by the Holy Ghost, accomplished by the Prayer of Consecration (“This is my Body…”) and the Epiclesis—the calling near of the Holy Ghost (“And we most humbly beseech thee to hear us…”) prayed shortly after the Consecration. In short, our Lord is present in the consecrated elements. But what does this mean to the Faithful who eat this Heavenly feast? We can express it well in the simple devotion we teach in the Salt and Light Course. After we have spent time preparing for the service by a personal examen and invoking the Holy Ghost’s indwelling presence personally, we ask Him to minister to us collectively by a series of entreaties to purify us, teach us by the Scripture, forgive our sins, and admit us to the Holy Table—all leading us to an exchange of our own nature for that of the Lord Himself. The Simple devotion? Just before receiving the Holy Sacrament we pray, ”Thy nature, O Lord, for my nature.” This is the ultimate “good deal” of the ages—giving our Father our fallen flesh for His more Excellent Way.” This is why we urge our members to have Communion at least weekly—we need His life and His nature. Come HolyGhost—change us into the Lord’s image when we exchange His own nature for ours in your sending out of your Church into the World.
Responsiblity for Believers
June 25, 2011
“The growth and maturity in Christ of every believer is, in a certain sense, the responsibility of every other believer in Christ. We must look not only to ourselves but to one another, passionately admonishing and wisely teaching so that we all might stand complete in Christ on that day.” ~ Sam Storms, The Hope of Glory: 100 Daily Meditations on Colossians
Bragging on God Time by Robyn Tate
June 23, 2011
OK, so I just gotta brag on God for a minute: A recent Friday was our deadline day at work, which means everyone is always scrambling to complete as many insurance cases as we possibly can before the end of the day. It’s usually crazy busy and rather stressful as we are always at the mercy of the insurance carriers getting us what we need to complete them and generally have the sales teams breathing down our necks to get their cases completed so they make their monthly quota and get their commission.
On a “good” deadline day we usually close about 40-50 lives. Last week we started Friday morning short of our goal by 132 lives and to top it off we had one particularly upset client who, of course, knew someone who was somebody and was making all kinds of threats if we didn’t get his case completed….Typically I would have been stressed but for some reason last week God gave me a peace and calmness that surpassed the circumstances (even when the angry broker was yelling at me). So I prayed for God to move and show His hand and enable us to close that case along with a few others that were close to completion and would give us a total of 75 lives (way above the average but not close to our goal…).
What happened, you ask? Well, not only were we able to close those three cases to get the 75 lives … we ended up closing over 200 lives for the day (which is totally unheard of) and surpassed our monthly goal by 68 lives!!!! Go, God!!!! Thank You, Jesus
But the story doesn’t end there. Yesterday while in the copy room one of the senior sales reps happened to be in there and thanked me for everything my team and I did to help them make their goal (as they were the team that were WAY behind). I thanked her for her compliment but told her that it wasn’t me it was TOTALLY God. I told her how I had prayed for Him to step in and show His hand that day. After thinking about it for a minute (and being a Christian herself), she agreed and acknowledged that it had to be God’s hand. Then today while we had a new brokerage firm touring our facility this same sales rep brought them over and introduced them to me and, after telling them how long I have been with the company and my experience, proceeded to tell them “and she prays over our cases” and about the 200 lives we closed out in one day. I was totally blown away by their response and how God used that one opportunity to reveal His hand and provide a witness to many about how much He cares for us and is concerned about every little detail of our lives.
Thanks you Jesus for caring so much for me and for hearing and answering my prayers and blessing these people! May it remind them how truly wonderful You are and be a seed to remind them also to turn to you in prayer in all things! Thank You, Jesus!

Liturgy Lesson for Trinity Sunday: the One True God
June 19, 2011
Trinity Sunday celebrates the great Christian belief in our triune God—one belief (among many) that distinguishes us from any religion, anytime, anywhere. We aren’t pagan polytheists, worshipping multiple gods, but believe in the one true God, expressed in three persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost—but still, one God. He revealed this truth to us via His Word—Holy Scripture—and much of the New Testament would be unintelligible without it. The Word trumpets God’s Trinity nature: He is one God in Isa 44:6-8; II Sam 7:22 & Deut 6; the Father is God in St. Matt 6:9; St. John 20; Rom 9:25 & II Cor 6:18; the Son is God in St. John 1 & 20; Heb 1: 1-8 & I Tim 3:16; the Holy Ghost is God Acts 5:3; I Cor 2:11 & Ps. 139:7. In liturgical worship, we reverence the invocation of the Blessed Trinity in worship with the Sign of the Cross, made over our forehead, breastbone and to either shoulder—which also commemorates the Jewish Passover—the Blood of the Pascal Lamb, Jesus, applied to door and lintel, forming a cross by which we enter our dwelling place. The Church Fathers
correctly represented Trinity with green, as this is the time of growth and fullness, because we have received God’s fullness God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost—and grow in Him!
