Summer Break for Children’s Church

May 17, 2012

In an effort to give our children’s teachers time to recharge, regroup, and reorganize for the fall, Summer Break will start June 1st.

There will be no Children’s Church during the 11:15 service from June 1st through August 31st.

If you have any questions regarding special needs arrangements during this time, please contact Mrs Christie or Miss Robyn.

Important Note: We will still have Sunday School for adults and children of all ages at 10:30 each Sunday. We look forward to seeing you and your kids there!

If you are interested in volunteering or assisting with Children’s Church in the Fall, please contact the parish office at admin@allsaintsanglican.net or via phone at (210) 344-1920.

Come to Koinonia

March 17, 2012

All Saints fam…consider coming to Koinonia. It’s like sitting in the surf of the Holy Ghost–wave after wave, a vigorous soaking. If you haven’t been there lately, I recommend you clear out some time for this, if not every week, at least a couple times a month.

Maybe you’d like to repair and rebuild your Christian life, or deepen your worship and freedom in Christ. Could be that you’re a seeker, wanting to taste to see the Lord is good. Check out how Nehemiah speaks to this.

Nehemiah’s all about rebuilding lives and finding depth, peace, and joy, remembering where we came from, while reveling in God’s security, Word, and provision to us.

He obeyed God and extended himself and his community to overcome unlikely odds to rebuild Jerusalem, God’s city, a term that means “the foundation of peace.” The foundation of peace rebuilt. Powerful. Tell me that doesn’t speak volumes to every one of us today.

This guy convinced the Persians to release him and his countrymen, who had survived a lost war with the Persians and then recruited them as workers to rebuild the holy city. After traveling home, he reunited them with a few refugees still in the area and assigned them each a section of the city’s wall. Their task: rebuild the wall and be prepared for combat at any moment. They worked with their weapons at hand. Vigilant. Focused. Building the city of faith again. Hard work. Discouraging circumstances, too.

The indigenous people around the city scoffed and told them it wasn’t going to happen. However, God blessed the work…and it was completed in only 52 days. At this point, Nehemiah secured the perimeter and began to enroll the people, placing them back in their Scriptural roles within Israeli society. They began to go where the Word had placed them and their people. And they began to really take their lives in God seriously, despite the fact the city was mostly defined by its walls and had few houses. In short, they had safety, but little comfort. Still, they were very concerned about how to best serve God. Then something even more significant happened.

In the course of this project, the Word of God–the Mosaic Law–that was found in the ruins of the city was brought forward and read aloud to the people from early morning until noon, as they listened attentively. Their reaction, documented in Nehemiah 8:

“5 Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. 6 Then Ezra blessed the LORD the great God. And all the people answered, “Amen, Amen!” while lifting up their hands; then they bowed low and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground.”

Notice what they did:

“The people stood up.” The people, survivors of military conquest, ruin of their lives, and in many cases, captivity, had been listening attentively to God’s Word all morning. They had every opportunity to be angry at God, but, instead, allowed their brokenness to be filled with God’s Word. The reacted when Ezra opened the book of the law in their sight by rising to their feet. They positioned themselves to do something.

“Then Ezra blessed the LORD the great God. And all the people answered, “Amen, Amen!” while lifting up their hands. They pronounced blessings on the God that gave them His Word, even in difficult circumstances, while offering God their hands in surrender and supplication. They make themselves available for Him, His worship, and His work.

“…Then they bowed low and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground.” They went the extra mile to worship with all they could. Beyond comfort. Sacrificing dignity. The Word convicted and humbled them.

At this point, the teachers explained the meaning of the Scriptures to the people rebuilding the city. Right about then, Nehemiah made a startling pronouncement:

“This day is holy to the LORD your God; do not mourn or weep.” For all the people were weeping when they heard the words of the law. 10 Then he said to them, “Go, eat of the fat, drink of the sweet, and send portions to him who has nothing prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” 11 So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still, for the day is holy; do not be grieved.” 12 All the people went away to eat, to drink, to send portions  and to celebrate a great festival, because they understood the words  which had been made known to them.

As a result, Israel established a day to remember the Feast of Booths, celebrating their freedom from long slavery in Egypt–a celebration that continues to this day. And they celebrated with joy!

And joy is how we receive the Word at Koinonia. Exuberance, in fact. And the Holy Ghost rolls. Healing. Deliverance. Encouragement. Transformation. The full Gospel.

If you haven’t been part of Koinonia, consider adding it as a regular and unique part of your worship time. Bring an unsaved friend or someone who has been out of church for some time. It’s the perfect punctuation for a Lord’s Day begun in the mass and Sunday School in the morning! And let the joy of the Lord be your strength as the walls of the holy city are rebuilt!
